When I was a kid, we thought Blacks and Women could run the world even better. Those myths where exploded in the recent era. We thought during the 2008 election that Obama would deliver the progressive goods. We where ceremoniously thrown under a buss with the Affordable Health Care Act. I didn’t vote for him, and I’ll never forgive him for that. Tom Harkins said, we had enough votes for National Health Care. And it was ignored when the AHCA was installed.
Obama seems to be settling in at around a 46 or 47 percent approval rating. For historical context, this would put him well ahead of President George W. Bush (who ended his term around 27 percent), but well behind President Bill Clinton and President Ronald Reagan.
Obama gets slightly unfavorable ratings on his handling of the economy — almost exactly in line with his marks for overall job performance. Some Obama proponents point to the nation’s steadily decreasing unemployment as a signal of his success. Detractors often note, however, that many people have left the workforce altogether on Obama’s watch.
Throughout America’s history, citizens have debated whether the country should take a lead role in solving the world’s problems, or err on the side of caution, staying out of conflicts until absolutely necessary.
Over the last year of polling, Americans have leaned toward caution, preferring to focus on problems at home. While this does not necessarily reflect directly on Obama, it speaks to the nation’s sense of unease about overseas activity and drawn-out, expensive conflicts. It’s likely this sentiment doesn’t help the president’s overall marks on foreign policy.
According to Counterpunch:Dave Lindorff=
Instead, the president began backpedaling almost instantly. Instead of restoring the rule of law, he almost immediately announced that he would not permit his Justice Department to engage in any prosecutions of CIA, FBI, military of Bush/Cheney administration personnel for violations of international law or of US law. He introduced new secrecy rules, launched a record number of prosecutions of government whistle blowers, including an international manhunt to arrest or kill NSA whistle blower Edward Snowden which included the forcing down of a presidential aircraft carrying the president of Bolivia, wrongly suspected of flying Snowden from Russia to that Latin American country, and a secret espionage indictment against Wikileaks founder Julien Assange, who has thus been trapped for years in the little UK embassy of Ecuador which has granted him asylum. And most egregiously, Barack Obama, sabotaged the first international meeting on climate change held in Denmark, and has ducked every opportunity to have the US lead on reaching an international agreement to seriously reduce global carbon emissions.
The Democratic Party has the Reagan facade of myth to prop up Obama’s history.
Poverty: While wealth inequality has increased, the number of people living in poverty has also generally increased. Below are figures from 1981 to 2014 for the number of people deemed to be poor and their percentage of the population.3 This percentage has been 15% or higher for three years of Obama’s presidency, from 2010-2012. It had reached that level only three other times since 1981.
Drone Strikes: how they are conducted.
Ultimately, Obama entertained by Human Rights abuses with drone strikes, as they are generally supported by the American public (though opposed throughout the world), and wildly popular in Congress. Americans will never know much more about these operations than what the Obama administration has selectively revealed, because, unlike the C.I.A. rendition program (which involved 136 victims), drone strikes (which have killed 3,922 people) occurred under both Republican and Democratic presidents. And there is no interest in Washington to fully investigate government programs that both political parties are directly responsible for. They are crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Some good things: He commended and supported the Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage saying, “In my second inaugural address, I said that if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. It is gratifying to see that principle enshrined into law by this decision.”
Obama and Raul Castro reversed over 60 years of tension between the U.S. and Cuba by restoring diplomatic ties.
One can imagine future histories that focus less on Obama’s dysfunctional relationship with Congress, and that measure accomplishment in more discerning proportion.
Obama will remembered as a false Liberal and Non progressive. Not a awful President, but not a good one either.
